Laser Safety

Hobby laser engravers are Class 4 lasers. Direct or reflected beam light can permanently damage your eyes in a fraction of a second, so always wear goggles rated (OD) for your machine's exact wavelength, even with an enclosure, and keep children and pets out of the room while it runs.

Lasers start fires. Never leave a running job unattended, keep a fire extinguisher rated for electrical and wood fires within reach, keep the bed clear of scrap and dust, and stop the job immediately if material flares up.

Engraving smoke is not just a smell. Wood, leather and acrylic release fine particles and irritating fumes, so vent to the outdoors or run a purifier rated for laser fumes. Never cut or engrave PVC, vinyl or anything containing chlorine, which releases corrosive chlorine gas, and check any unknown plastic before it goes on the bed.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for setup, ventilation and maintenance, and check your local rules before selling engraved goods that touch food.
